News

05 May 2022

Up to 100 young people aged 18-25 in Bradford to be given a fantastic and free opportunity to shape the future of their county.

Starting on Thursday 19 May 2022 the Bradford150 leadership development programme will challenge a diverse group of 100 young people to think through what their generation’s legacy will be.

Through the online programme, led by international leadership development organisation Common Purpose, participants will work together to tackle a challenge for Bradford. The programme has a green challenge at its heart: “How do we act together to transform our community into a cleaner, greener place for all?” Participants will investigate issues, collaborate, hold difficult conversations and work up ideas. They will then test, refine and present these ideas to local senior leaders.

Sponsors include Bradford District and Craven Health and Care Partnership, Bradford Council, University of Bradford, and Bradford College.

Mel Pickup, Place Lead for the Bradford District and Craven Health and Care Partnership and Chief Executive for Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “Young people are our future, therefore we want to equip them with the skills they need to be the inspiring leaders for tomorrow. When we listen to young people from across our place, we often hear how they want to be involved in decisions made locally that impact their lives. This partnership with Common Purpose is a demonstrable commitment from our partnership that we understand the value young people and young leaders bring to us and to our communities.”

Therese Patten, Health Lead for Children and Young People for the Bradford District and Craven Health and Care Partnership and Chief Executive for Bradford District Care NHS Trust, said: “This partnership offers aspiring young leaders the opportunity to take part in a global campaign that we expect will leave a lasting legacy for us locally as well as globally. The focus for the upcoming campaign is sustainability which matters to all of us and we have already seen examples of young people taking the lead to create the conditions for change. Across our partnership we are proud that we are one of the youngest places not just in the UK but in Europe which means we have untapped talent that could drive the local, regional and national agenda in creating a fairer, green and sustainable world. That would a legacy for generations to come.”

Bradford150 is part of Legacy, a global campaign by Common Purpose, which invests in young people across the world so they can become a connected generation of leaders with a clear vision for what their legacy will be. Everyone who completes Bradford150 will have the opportunity to attend their Global Legacy Summit to connect with young leaders from other Legacy Initiatives in the US, Singapore, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Germany, and closer to home in the UK in Newcastle, Northern Ireland and other areas.

The programme takes place over four days from 19-20 and 23-24 May 2022. Young people aged 18-25, in and out of work, studying, campaigning and volunteering – can apply through the Common Purpose website: Bradford150: Register now | Leadership programmes | Common Purpose
